Crimes involving dating sites and apps has doubled in the last four years. Once almost taboo, online dating has become the norm for many while even dating apps have been credited as responsible for many weddings. There are plenty of success stories and these sites and apps can be a lifeline for those hungry for romance in a world where meeting people in the community is growing ever hard.

Those embarking on a romantic journey through sites and apps need to be careful to avoid being duped, stalked or, sadly, much worse.

The impact of social distancing has meant a rethink of the way singles engage with others on dating apps – and more people than ever now want a partner as lockdown exposes the reality of loneliness. But far from giving up altogether, singles who are stuck at home are apparently spending more interacting online than ever. It’s leading to a “new era of digital courtship”, according to research from one dating app.

According to the bosses of Badoo, data shows half 50 per cent of singles are spending more time on the app, engaging in longer and more meaningful conversations with those they might not normally chat to. And with lockdown leading to an increased sense of isolation – especially for those who live alone – the vast majority 67 per cent admit to longing for a relationship during these uncertain and difficult times, with nearly half 44 per cent confessing that finding a partner feels more important to them than ever.

Despite not being able to go out on dates in the real world, singletons continue to date creatively with users suggesting virtual museum tours 92 per cent , online classes 91 per cent and quizzes 90 per cent to break the ice and assess compatibility. The research shows almost half 47 per cent are less concerned about looks at this time and are instead focusing more on the personality of their match. A further 48 per cent said they are giving people more of a chance, speaking to those they might not connect with normally.

Casually tapping on their smartphones and smoking in the sunshine, the young men gathered outside the once grand, but now slightly downmarket, hotel appeared carefree and relaxed. Their untroubled, if somewhat bored, demeanour is perhaps no surprise. An investigation by The Mail on Sunday can reveal that at least 20 — and perhaps as many as 50 — hotels across Britain are being used to house migrants who have made the perilous crossing on small boats across the English Channel pictured, people believed to be migrants outside the Royal Hotel in Hull city centre which is housing migrants.

The deal is shrouded in secrecy with Government officials refusing to say precisely how many hotels are being used and how many asylum seekers are staying in them. Hull’s imposing railway hotel, which hosted Queen Victoria in and featured in one of Philip Larkin’s early poems, is a short walk to the local shisha lounge and the nearest corner shop. This is the daily routine for many recently arrived migrants who, having travelled from war-torn states, wait as so-called ‘boat-chasing’ lawyers seek to convince the UK Government they are genuine refugees fleeing persecution and not economic migrants.

Burly security guards wearing face masks prevent casual visitors setting foot inside the Grade II listed hotel, making it clear that asylum-seekers are the only guests. It is likely that they will be staying on Humberside for some time. The Novotel hotel chain is also understood to have also reached lucrative agreements with the Home Office to house migrants.
